    VFW to have Halloween Party

    Don’t miss the “spooktacular” Halloween Party hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 7288 in Calabash from 7-11 p.m. Saturday night, Oct. 30.

    Tickets are $10 each and include music, heavy hors d’ oeuvres, both savory and trick-or-treat sweet. Cash bar will be available. Tickets can be purchased in the post canteen until Oct. 25.

  • American Legion blood drive set for Saturday, Nov. 6

    The American Legion in Calabash will host a community blood drive sponsored by the American Red Cross and Delta Air Lines from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6.

    Call 575-5037 for an appointment. All presenting donors will be automatically entered in a drawing to win a pair of Delta Roundup airline tickets.

    An announcement in last week’s Beacon incorrectly listed the event date as Saturday, Oct. 23.

  • Elks plan Halloween dinner and dance

    The Calabash Elks will host a Halloween costume dinner and dance fundraiser from 6-10 p.m.

    This year’s menu is a choice of either prime rib or chicken cordon bleu. Entertainment will be provided by Hot and Heavy in full Halloween regalia.  Cost is $15 per person and reservations are required. Seating is limited. Call 579-4600.

    Newcomers to meet Oct. 20

    The next meeting of the Brunswick Newcomers Club (BNC) will be Wednesday, Oct.  20, at the Southport Community Center, 223 E. Bay St. (between Bay and Moore streets). The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and refreshments followed by the formal meeting at 10 a.m.

  • Local American Veterans Post 906 has raffle

    The winner of a recent raffle at AMVETS (American Veterans) Post 906 in Boiling Spring Lakes was Jaime Jackson, a 25-year-old former resident of Wilmington and granddaughter of Jerry Wolf Sr., first vice commander of AMVETS Post 906, who purchased the winning raffle ticket as a gift for his granddaughter.

    Jaime and her husband Shane immediately donated $60 back to Post 906, stipulating that it be used to help provide hats for the Post’s men’s class B softball team entered in the Brunswick County Parks & Recreation League.

    DAR to meet Oct. 13

    The Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Trinity United Methodist Church on E. Nash Street in Southport, across from the post office.

    The guest speaker will be Michael Craft, who will discuss the Iraq/Afghanistan war efforts.

  • VFW Ladies Auxiliary celebrates 25th anniversary

    This year, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7288 in Calabash celebrated its 25th anniversary with a dinner/dance at the post on Aug. 14. Chartered on Aug. 4, 1985, the auxiliary started with 45 charter members and now has a membership of 166, with 52 of them life members.

    The auxiliary has had steady growth since 1985 and members have loyally contributed their time, talents and heart to provide assistance to the veterans and their families and to aid active duty troops and their families.

    Newcomers Club to meet Sept. 15

    The Brunswick Newcomers Club will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Southport Community Center, 223 E. Bay St. (between Bay and Moore streets). The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and refreshments, followed by the formal meeting at 10 a.m.

    This first meeting of the year will be devoted to presentations of the club’s social and travel plans for the coming year. Sign-up sheets for various activities and trips will be available at the meeting.

  • VFW Ladies Auxiliary members attend national convention

    Members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7288 in Calabash attended the 2010 VFW National Convention from Aug. 21-26 in Indianapolis, Ind.

  • Sea Trail Garden Club plans fundraiser fashion show

    Sea Trail Garden Club and Dillard’s of Coastal Grand Mall in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., will host its annual fashion show, charity auction and luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Sea Trail Conference Center in Sunset Beach to benefit local charities.

    Doors open at 9 a.m. Cost is $20 for reserved seating only. Checks should be made payable to Sea Trail Garden Club and are due by Sept. 15. Mail checks to: Ellen Belford, 212 Crooked Gulley Circle, Sunset Beach, NC 28468.
